the experience

The Funhouse is the lovechild of Toronto’s most imaginative visual and music artists, who have come together to transform an old grocery store from the 1950s into an interactive two-storey adventure world.

The adventure begins as you check yourself into an inter-dimensional hotel, but you’ll quickly find everything is not as it seems. As you descend down a wormhole to an alternate universe, your stay at the Funhouse will do everything but put you to sleep.

Fairland Funhouse is all about discovery, play, and art that you can be IN. You might find a lush, floral jungle, a celestial crystal cave or an underwater ballroom - who knows where you’ll end up!

the place

Kensington Market is one of Toronto’s most beloved, multicultural neighbourhoods, with a long history celebrating diversity, arts and culture. Fairland was a grocery store for many years, notorious for its rooftop concerts, during the market’s famous Pedestrian Sundays. Its sign has become a landmark of the main thoroughfare in this bustling community, and soon to become an icon for Toronto’s art and music scene.

the artists

FEATURE ARTIST COLLABORATIONS: Featured rooms of the art maze are designed in collaboration by a pair of artists - musicians teamed up with visual creators, melding their ideas and passions together to create a multi-sensory experience.

Hot off winning their first JUNO award for Breakthrough Group of the Year 2018, brash garage pop outfit The Beaches are paired with multidisciplinary artists the Broadbent sisters, known for transforming the domestic into dreamlike realms, and everyday objects into mystical artifacts. Step into their world of pop spirituality, anchored by the hit song “Gold” and filled with a powerhouse female meets 70s rock glam energy.

Take a deep breath from the maze in a lush tropical jungle, alive with sound, oversized plants and animals. This oasis was designed in collaboration by rapper Jazz Cartier and mixed media artist Casey Watson, who can be found using everything from coffee filters to zip-ties to create large scale installations, most recently seen in Anthropologie stores worldwide.

After losing his mother at a young age and dealing with heartbreak, Bad Child sought refuge from the world with music. Together with artist Paul Jackson, known for fusing the natural with the surreal & supernatural incorporating elements of technological failings, the duo absorbs visitors into a distorted and glitchy take on modern romance, in a sci-fi meets chill inducing nostalgia setting. Sit down to take in the full narrative, which was inspired by the genre-bending multi-instrumentalist’s recent Free Trial album.

New City’s dirty digital genre-blending songs soundtrack the carefree spirit of today's generation. Completely unapologetic about having a good time and bringing a grungy street feel indoors, their space ‘Graffiti Alley’ goes digital in their collaboration with artist GETSO, who is well-known for graffiti lettering but is venturing into other mediums such as installations and muralism.

Enter the hotel’s dark underbelly, a celestial crystal cave at once beautiful and inviting, but inciting a bizarre and unnerving sensation of being trapped. Darker notes from alt-pop phenomenon and multi JUNO Award winner LIGHTS, are partnered with frequent collaborators Christina Mazzulla and Shanna Van Maurik, both known for their distinct use of colour and dreamlike interpretations of nature.

Known for some of the most creative music videos on the web, SonReal’s ‘Everywhere We Go’ boasts the best talent show sequence since Napoleon Dynamite and racked up over 14 million plays to date. Party amongst the motley crew of characters from SonReal’s many stylized worlds, which are brought to life by a perfect match, artist Jeff Blackburn who is inspired by illustration, graffiti and comic books.
